Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area is in the centre of Florida. The area is reknown for a good population of Red-cockaded Woodpacker. The surroundings are good for breeding Bald Eagles and the reintroduction of Whooping Crane (Lake Kissimmee). This is also a good area to find Northern Caracara and Turkey. Also the rare and declining Red-cockaded Woodpecker can be found in this region. Due to the drought in the south we found our only Snail Kite at Southport Park, near Three lakes
This Limpkin was acting a bit weird, foraging
in a concrete gully totally in the open. |
A tipical central Florida bird, this Northern
Caracara. Central Florida is the only stronghold in the region for this
species. We only found one bird during our two days stay in the area. |

Here a picture of the so called 'mature
pine forest' in Three lakes, the typical habitat for the rare and declining
Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Finding them is extremely easy in this type of
forest: yust find a tree with a white painted bands and check these because
these are the trees with cavities. Bachman's Sparrow is also common in
this habitat. |
Here's a rather poor picture of a Bachman's
Sparrow, a species sharing habitat with the Red-cockaded Woodpecker. |
