Sanibel island is a large island on the west coast of Florida. It is famous for the vagrants that have been found here during migration. The island has one big park, J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge, with a one-way drive tour. The lighthouse at the eastern tip of the island should be good for migrant but was empty during our stay. Highlights in the refuge were Yellow-crowned Night Heron (my only one for the trip) and a beautiful Mangrove Cuckoo.

J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge
is a nice wetland with mangrove forest and Hammocks. Birds on this overview
include pelicans, cormorants, White Ibisses and several egrets. |

This Racoon foraged the roadside verge
and never bother our presence. |
This Mangrove Cuckoo had a caterpillar
for its partner. Quite a show when it feeded its parnter. Unfortunately
I run out of slides when that happened. Nevertheless this sighting was
far better than expected from a sculker lik this. |
The White Ibis is a common bird al over
the region. In Ding Darling it is more than abundant. |
