The famous Everglades NP is almost boring when entering from Homestead. Birding is great at the ponds along the road to Flamingo and at the Anhinga Trail. They warn about mosquitoes from June onward but may was just as bad. Some spots, including the campground were almost impossible to bird or to be out of your car for only a few minutes. Highlights were Broad-winged Hawk, Bald Eagle, Limpkin, Solitary Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper and Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow.

When entering the Everglades from Homestead
you see vast grasslands with some scattered trees, almost boring. But
the pond and Rookeries are great for birding. Unfortunately the musquitos
are more than a nuisance. |

Don't let the birds make you forget about
all the rest! The Everglades is a dangerous place filled with alligators.
This one was pretty close to the shore and snoared at us as we approached
too close. |
Fortunately the law in the Everglades
is enforced by just the right indivuduals. But I guess this Turkey Vulture
wouldn't have mind a small part of our breakfast. |
At Anhinga Trail birds allow for extreme
close approach. This Double-crested Cormorant didn't even mind a little
pat on the back. |
Another confiding bird, this white form
if Great Blue Heron, that can only be found in the southern parts of Florida
especially in the Everglades. |
