Scopoli's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea, Scopoli's Pijlstormvogel): 1+ – seen during windy weather from the balcony of our appartment in Pomos.
Levantine Shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan, Yelkouan Pijlstormvogel): 3 – seen during windy weather from the balcony of our appartment in Pomos.
European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii, Kuifaalscholver): 2 – present on the rocks in sea in front of our appartment.
Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea, Blauwe Reiger): XX – seen at several spots, in numbers exceeding 100 on 10-9 and 21-9 flying past Pomos in the direction of Akamas peninsula.
Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea, Purperreiger): XX – seen at several spots, in numbers exceeding 100 on 10-9 and 21-9 flying past Pomos in the direction of Akamas peninsula together with Grey Herons.
Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides, Ralreiger): 1 – flying in a group of Little Egrets over sea in front of our appartment, 1 – Zakaki Pond.
Little Egret (Egretta garzetta, Kleine Zilverreiger): X – a flock passing our appartment, X – present on rocks at Akamas peninsula.
Black Stork (Ciconia nigra, Zwarte Ooievaar): 3 – flying over Zakaki Pond.
Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus, Zwarte Ibis): 3 – one present in Zakaki Pond, took off with another 2 passing.
Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber, Europese Flamingo): CC – Salt lake near Akrotiri.
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos, Wilde Eend): V – Zakaki Pond.
Common Teal (Anas crecca, Wintertaling): 1 – Zakaki Pond.
Garganey (Anas querquedula, Zomertaling): V – Zakaki Pond.
Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus, Vale Gier): 6 – flying towards Kensington Cliffs.
Black Kite (Milvus migrans, Zwarte Wouw): 2 – Akrotiri.
Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus, Bruine Kiekendief): V – Akrotiri and Zakaki Pond.
Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus, Grauwe Kiekendief): 2 – Akrotiri and Panagia.
Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo (vulpinus), Steppebuizerd): 3 – Pomos.
Honey-buzzard (Pernis apivorus, Wespendief): XX – all over the island migrating.
Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus, Sperwer): 2– Pomos (one had features of Levant Sparrowhawk).
Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus, Torenvalk): X – various places.
Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus, Roodpootvalk): 1 – Pomos -> Kato Pyrgos.
Eleonora's Falcon (Falco eleonorae, Eleonora's Valk): V – Kensington Cliffs.
Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus, Zwarte Frankolijn): 2 – in a field beside the road from Pomos to Polis.
Chukar (Alectoris chukar, Aziatische Steenpatrijs): XX – several flocks around Pomos and on Akamas peninsula.
Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus, Waterral): V – heard calling at Zakaki Pond.
Common Coot (Fulica atra, Meerkoet): XX – Zakaki Pond.
Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus, Waterhoen): XX – Zakaki Pond.
Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus, Steltkluut): V- Zakaki Pond.
Little Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius, Kleine Plevier): V – along Lady's Mile Beach.
Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus, Strandplevier): XX – along Lady's Mile Beach.
Greater Sand Plover (Charadrius leschenaultii, Woestijnplevier): 1 – along Lady's Mile Beach.
Turnstone (Arenaria interpres, Steenloper): 1 – flying by at Paphos headlands.
Dunlin (Calidris alpina, Bonte Strandloper): V – Zakaki Pond.
Little Stint (Calidris minuta, Kleine Strandloper): X – Lady's Mile Beach and Zakaki Pond.
Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola, Bosruiter): 1 – Zakaki Pond.
Common Sandpiper (Tringa hypoleucos, Oeverloper): V – Pomos, mostly heard after dusk.
Greenshank (Tringa nebularia, Groenpootruiter): V – Zakaki Pond.
Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago, Watersnip): 1 – Zakaki Pond.
Audouin's Gull (Larus audouinii, Audouins Meeuw - Near threatened): 1 – flying past Pomos harbour.
Meditarranean Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis, Geelpootmeeuw): XX – Pomos, Paphos headlands, Akamas peninsula.
Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus (incl. subsp. fuscus), (Baltische) Kleine Mantelmeeuw): C – Pomos, Zakaki Pond (1 - fuscus).
White-winged Black Tern (Chlidonias leucopterus, Witvleugelstern): V – Zakaki Pond.
Rock Pigeon (Columba livia, Rotsduif): V – Akamas peninsula.
Common Wood-Pigeon (Columba palumbus, Houtduif): X – common inland.
Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto, Turkse Tortel): C – nearly everywhere.
European Turtle-Dove (Streptopelia turtur, Tortel): V – forests behind Pomos.
Common Swift (Apus apus, Gierzwaluw): 1 – surprisingly most must have left allready, the only one was amongst a big flock of Swallows at Evretou Dam.
Pallid Swift (Apus pallidus, Vale Gierzwaluw): V – Zakaki Pond
Alpine Swift (Tachymarptis melba, Alpengierzwaluw): 2 – together with the same flock of Swallows at Evretou Dam.
Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis, IJsvogel): V – At least 2 at Zakaki Pond, 1 present on the rocks in sea in front of our appartment.
European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster, Bijeneter): CC – seen and more often heard all over the island, daily. Numbers of flocks exceeding 40 together. Most numerous during a windy day.
European Roller (Coracias garrulus, Scharrelaar): 1 – probably also gone. Only one bird at Paphos headlands, probably migrating.
Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops, Hop): 1 – in the forest behind Phasouri (while searching in vain for Phasouri Reed Beds).
Crested Lark (Galerida cristata, Kuifleeuwerik): XX - several spots including Pomos and Akrotiri, common.
Northern House Martin (Delichon urbica, Huiszwaluw): XX – migrating.
Eurasian Crag Martin (Hirundo rupestris, Rotszwaluw): 2 – in the mountains at Kykkos.
Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica, Boerenzwaluw): M – all over the island, migrating in huge numbers. Impressing was the flock over Evretou Dam on the morning of 17-9, easily exceeding 1000 birds.
Red-rumped Swallow (Hirundo daurica, Roodstuitzwaluw): X– at several spots including Akrotiri and in the forest behind Pomos.
Sand Martin (Riparia riparia, Oeverzwaluw): XX – not common but seen in numbes over Akrotiri, Zakaki Pond and Paphos headlands.
Tree Pipit (Anthus trivialis, Boompieper): V – migrating over Paphos headlands, also heard over forests near Pomos.
White Wagtail (Motacilla alba, Witte Kwikstaart): V – various places.
Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava, Gele Kwikstaart): V – several places including Pomos.
Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes cypriotes, Winterkoning): 1 – Panagia.
Northern Weathear (Oenanthe oenanthe, Tapuit): 1 – Pomos.
Isabelline Weathear (Oenanthe isabellina, Izabeltapuit): 1 – at the ruins of Kourion.
Cyprus Pied Weathear (Oenanthe cypriaca, Cyprustapuit): XX – fairly common and seen nearly daily.
Finch' Weathear (Oenanthe finchii, Finch' Tapuit): 1 female – Pomos.
Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra, Paapje): V – various places.
Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla, Zwartkop): V – Pomos.
Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala, Kleine Zwartkop): X – various places.
Cyprus Warbler (Sylvia melanothorax, Cyprusgrasmus): V – Pomos, Evretou Dam.
Ruppell's Warbler (Sylvia rueppelli, Ruppels Grasmus): 1 – Pomos.
Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata, Brilgrasmus): 2 – in shrubbery near Lady's Mile Beach.
Sedge Warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus, Rietzanger): 1 – Zakaki Pond.
Zitting Cisticola (Cisticola juncidis, Graszanger): X – various places.
Cetti's Warbler (Cettia cetti, Cetti's Zanger): X – various places.
Eurasian Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus (probable fuscus), Kleine (Kaspische?) Karekiet): 2 – Zakaki Pond.
Great Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus, Grote Karekiet): 1 – Zakaki Pond.
Olivaceous Warbler (Hippolais polyglotta, Vale Spotvogel): X fairly common around Pomos.
Willow Warbler (Philloscopus trochilus, Fitis): X – fairly common, esspecially one of the last days around Pomos, probably just arrived during migration.
Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata, Grauwe Vliegenvanger): X – various places.
Great Tit (Parus major aphrodite, Koolmees): XX – various places.
Coal Tit (Parus ater cyrpiotes, Zwarte Mees): XX – very common in pine forests.
Short-toed Treecreeper (Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae, Boomkruiper): V – easily found in the forests behind Pomos.
Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio, Grauwe Klauwier): XX – very common migrating bird.
Masked Shrike (Lanius nubicos, Maskerklauwier): V – around Pomos and at Evretou Dam.
Lesser Grey Shrike (Lanius minor, Kleine Klapekster): V – Akrotiri and Lady's Mile Beach.
Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica, Ekster): X – various places.
Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius glaszneri, Gaai): X – common in forests.
Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix, Bonte Kraai): C– very common.
Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus, Wielewaal): 2 – Pomos.
House Sparrow (Passer domesticus, Huismus): C – all over.
Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis, Spaanse Mus): X – rural area around Pomos and between Pomos and Polis.
Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs, Vink): X – common.
Eurasian Linnet (Carduelis cannabina, Kneu): XX – common.
European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis, Putter): XX - very common.
European Greenfinch (Carduelis chloris, Groenling): X – fairly common.
European Serin (Serinus serinus, Europese Kanarie): 2 – Panagia.
Cretzschmar's Bunting (Emberiza caesia, Bruinkeelortolaan): 2 – in a field along the road from Pomos to Polis.
Corn Bunting (Miliaria calandra, Grauwe Gors): 1 – Evretou Dam.

BUTTERFLIES

Swallowtail (Papilio machaon, Koninginnepage): 1 – Polis (10-9-05), 2 – Akrotiri (11 and 12-9-05), 1 – Paphos headlands.
Large White (Pieris brassicae, Groot Koolwitje): few (2-4) – Kykkos (14-9-05)
Small White (Pieris rapae, Klein koolwitje): common and widespread.
Small Bath White (Pontia chloridice, Klein Resedawitje): 1 – near Kato Pyrgos.
Painted Lady (Vanessa carui, Distelvlinder): 1 – near Pomos.
Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta, Atalanta): 1 – Kykkos.
Cardinal (Argynnis pandora, Kardinaalsmantel): V – Kykkos.
Cyprus Grayling (Hipparchia cypriensis, Cyprusheivlinder - Endemic): seen almost daily from 14 to 20 sept, most common in the hills just behind (south of) Pomos and between Pomos and Kato Pyrgos, also Akamas peninsula (Aphrodite trail) and in Pomos town, seen in good numbers during the trip Pomos-Kykkos (14-5-05).
Eastern Rock Grayling (Hipparchia syriaca, Balkanboswachter): seen well on two occasions in the hills behind Pomos along the road leading from Pomos into the hills (at least 3 on 15-9-05 and at least 1 on 18-9-05).
The Hermit (Chazaria briseis, Heremiet): 1 – Kato Pyrgos (14-9-05), 1 along the road Kato Pyrgos - Pomos (14-9-05), 1 in Pomos (20-9-05).
White-banded Grayling (Pseudochazara anthelea, Witbandheremiet): 2 – Kykkos.
Cyprus Meadow Brown (Maniola cypricola, Cyprus Bruin Zandoogje): 1 in the hills behind Pomos (14-9-05), 2 along the Aphrodite trail in the Akamas peninsula (20-9-05).
Long-tailed Blue (Lampides boeticus, Tijgerblauwtje): several (> 5) at an agricultural field somewhere in the middle between Polis and Pomos (11 and 12-9-05).
Lang's Short-tailed Blue (Leptotes pirithous, Klein Tijgerblauwtje): several (> 3) at the grassfield of the monastry in Kykkos (14-9-05), 1 just north of Pomos (22-9-05).
African Grass Blue (Zizeeria knysna, Amethistblauwtje): several in Polis, some even in flower tubs in the center (10-9-05), a few along the road in Pomos (18-9-05).
Mallow Skipper (Carcharodes alceae, Kaasjeskruiddikkopje): 1 seen along the road in Pomos (18-9-05).
Pigmy Skipper (Gegenes pumilio, Klein Kustdikkopje): 1 seen in the hills behind Pomos.
